This Project focuses on the structure and spatiality of Islamic dome typologies. It proposes a reconfiguration of the uninhabitable layers of the historical dome, transforming them into new intertwined habitable sequences of public and private spaces for a museum.

Systems Prototype

Prototype of The Systems Practice explores layered spatial compositions through a combination of concrete and brick elements. From the elevation, small brick segments reveal the hidden System B spaces within, each offering unique spatial experiences shaped by varying room heights. The elevation features arches in multiple orientations, some aligned, others offset, resulting from the transformation of shadow patterns cast by muqarnas into three-dimensional forms. In the 3D prototype, white layers represent the concrete outer shells, while the brick serves as an intermediary material where intersecting volumes meet. Two bricklaying methods are used: sectional cuts at sliced geometries and curved applications within fully enclosed forms, showcasing material contrast and spatial complexity.

Ground Floor Plan Drawing


The hatched areas in the plan denote the System B spaces, which redefine the intermediary zones within the layered dome structure. These spaces begin compact at the lower levels and gradually expand in size as they rise, serving primarily private functions.

At the center lies a green atrium that draws natural light from a skylight in the roof. Surrounding this central space, larger, solid volumes intertwine with smaller, more intricate rooms, creating a dynamic spatial composition.

The museum consists of four above-ground floors, each with varying ceiling heights. Room heights are determined by the placement of voids, creating a range of spatial experiences throughout the building. The System B areas, indicated by hatching, are embedded as a series of spaces within the larger white concrete volumes. These zones are designated for private functions, including galleries, offices, administrative areas, and other enclosed rooms.

At the heart of the building, a large vertical void organizes circulation and frames a green space at ground level. Natural light filters in from clerestory openings at the top floor, cascading down through the central void to illuminate the interior spaces.

System B Spaces in Brick Material


These spaces are composed of curved and unexpected geometries, each with distinct spatial qualities. They are located at the intersections between the concrete volumes.

Windows are strategically placed primarily where surfaces overlap or in the gaps between forms. One large window is designed to frame the best view of the imperial garden, while the smaller windows remain hidden from the exterior. This results in a solid, chunky façade that reflects the layered nature of the dome and reinforces the spatial concept.
